Mud cleaners are solid control equipment that integrates sand removal, silt removal and mud vibration functions. It can effectively remove fine particles in drilling mud and improve drilling efficiency and mud quality. Its compact and sturdy layout and adjustable characteristics make it competent for various drilling tasks.

Common faults and troubleshooting methods of mud cleaners

1. Vibrating screen failure

Abnormal vibration

Phenomenon: Vibrating screen vibrates with violent shaking, excessive noise or uneven vibration.

Cause analysis: It may be that the counterweight of the vibration motor is installed incorrectly, the vibration motor is damaged, the bolts connecting the screen box and the base are loose, the screen is not installed firmly, and the screen box is deformed.

Troubleshooting method: First check whether the counterweight of the vibration motor is installed symmetrically, and adjust the position of the counterweight to meet the requirements; if the vibration motor is damaged, the motor should be replaced in time. Check the connecting bolts between the screen box and the base, and tighten them according to the specified torque. Reinstall the screen to ensure that the screen is installed firmly and the tension is appropriate. If the screen box is deformed, it should be corrected or replaced according to the deformation.

Screen blockage

Phenomenon: The slurry accumulates on the screen and cannot pass through the screen smoothly, resulting in a decrease in screening efficiency.

Cause analysis: The solid content in the slurry is too high, the screen is improperly selected, there are debris on the screen surface, or the screen has been used for too long, resulting in the screen hole being worn too small.

Treatment measures: Appropriately reduce the solid content in the mud, which can be achieved by adjusting the mud treatment process or adding mud treatment equipment. According to the size of the solid particles in the mud, select a screen with a suitable mesh. Clean the debris on the surface of the screen. If the screen is severely worn, the screen should be replaced in time.

Screen damage

Phenomenon: The screen is damaged by cracks, holes, etc., causing solid particles to leak into the slurry under the screen.

Cause analysis: The screen quality is unqualified, the screen is improperly installed, the mud contains sharp solid particles, and the vibrating screen vibrates abnormally. Troubleshooting method: Select a screen of qualified quality and install it according to the correct installation method. Pre-treat the mud to remove sharp solid particles. If the screen breakage is caused by abnormal vibration of the vibrating screen, the abnormal vibration fault should be eliminated first, and then the broken screen should be replaced.

2. Hydrocyclone failure

Low separation efficiency

Phenomenon: The mud discharged from the bottom flow channel of the cyclone contains more fine particles, and the mud discharged from the overflow port has a high solid content, and the separation effect is not good.

Cause analysis: wear of the cyclone nozzle or overflow pipe, unstable or unqualified slurry supply pressure, inappropriate slurry concentration and viscosity, incorrect cyclone installation angle, etc.

Troubleshooting method: Check the wear of the cyclone nozzle and overflow pipe, and replace the worn parts in time. Install a pressure gauge to monitor the slurry supply pressure, and stabilize the slurry supply pressure within the range required by the equipment by adjusting the speed of the slurry pump or the outlet valve. According to the nature of the slurry, adjust the concentration and viscosity of the slurry to meet the working requirements of the cyclone. Check the installation angle of the cyclone to ensure that it meets the requirements of the equipment installation manual.

If there is any deviation, it should be adjusted in time.

Bottom flow port is blocked

Phenomenon: The slurry discharge from the bottom flow port of the cyclone is not smooth, or even completely blocked, causing the cyclone to fail to work properly.

Cause analysis: The solid particles in the slurry are too large, the concentration is too high, or the diameter of the cyclone nozzle is too small, causing the solid particles to accumulate and block at the bottom flow port.

Treatment method: Pre-treat the slurry to remove the larger solid particles. Appropriately reduce the slurry concentration or replace the cyclone nozzle with a larger diameter to ensure that the solid particles can be discharged smoothly. If the bottom flow channel is blocked, use a high-pressure water gun to flush the bottom flow channel to clear the blocked area.

The overflow port water is very thick

Phenomenon: The slurry discharged from the overflow port of the cyclone contains a large number of large solid particles.

Cause analysis: The working pressure of the cyclone is too high, the cyclone nozzle is severely worn, and the slurry feed volume is too large.

Troubleshooting method: Reduce the slurry supply pressure to meet the equipment requirements. Replace the worn cyclone nozzle to ensure the separation effect of the cyclone separator. Adjust the flow rate of the slurry supply pump to control the amount of slurry inlet to avoid excessive slurry inlet causing insufficient separation of the cyclone separator.

3. Failure of the slurry supply pump

Insufficient flow

Phenomenon: The slurry flow rate output by the slurry supply pump does not meet the equipment requirements, resulting in insufficient slurry supply to the hydrocyclone, affecting the overall efficiency of the slurry cleaner.

Cause analysis: Pump impeller wear, pump suction pipeline blockage, pump speed is too low, and pump seal damage causes leakage.

Troubleshooting method: Check the wear of the pump impeller. If the wear is serious, the impeller should be replaced in time. Clean the suction pipeline of the pump and remove debris and blockages in the pipeline. Check the motor speed of the pump to ensure that it meets the equipment requirements. If the speed is too low, check whether the motor and transmission device are faulty and repair them. Check the pump seals and replace damaged seals to prevent slurry leakage from affecting the pump flow.

Insufficient pressure

Phenomenon: The mud pressure output by the slurry supply pump is too low to meet the working pressure requirements of the cyclone.

Cause analysis: Similar to the cause of insufficient flow, impeller wear, suction line blockage, seal leakage, etc. may all lead to insufficient pump pressure. In addition, the pump outlet valve is not fully opened and the pump head is improperly selected, which may also lead to insufficient pressure.

Troubleshooting method: Eliminate and deal with the above reasons. Make sure that the pump outlet valve is fully opened and check whether the pump head meets the actual working requirements. If not, the slurry pump head of a suitable model should be replaced.

Abnormal pump vibration

Phenomenon: The slurry supply pump vibrates violently during operation, accompanied by abnormal noise. Cause analysis: The pump foundation is not firmly installed, the coupling between the pump and the motor is poorly aligned, the pump impeller is unbalanced, and the pump suction pipeline leaks.

Treatment method: Check the foundation of the pump to ensure that the foundation is firm and the anchor bolts are not loose. Re-center the coupling between the pump and the motor to ensure that the concentricity of the two meets the requirements. Perform dynamic balancing test and adjustment on the impeller. If the impeller is damaged, it should be replaced in time. Check the suction pipeline of the pump to ensure that the pipeline is well sealed and there is no air leakage. If there is air leakage, it should be repaired in time.
